About Department
The Department of Dravyaguna is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic education, focusing on the comprehensive study of medicinal plants, their identification, properties, actions, and therapeutic applications. Dravyaguna bridges classical Ayurvedic principles with modern pharmacological understanding, enabling students to recognize, analyze, and apply herbal drugs with scientific accuracy and confidence.
Through experiential learning in the herbal garden, museum, pharmacognosy laboratory, and departmental library, students gain both theoretical clarity and hands-on skills essential for their clinical and academic growth. The department aims to cultivate a strong foundation in Ayurvedic pharmacology, nurturing future physicians who can utilize medicinal plants responsibly and effectively.
FACILITIES
The department offers the following facilities to support complete and practical learning:
- Medicinal Plant Garden
The Dravyaguna Department maintains a well-developed herbal garden spread across 4049 sq. meters.
Key features include:
- 950+ medicinal plants representing 220 different species
- A 51 sq. meter demonstration room for outdoor teaching and practical sessions
- Concept gardens such as Tulasi Vanam, showcasing various Tulsi varieties
- Flowering plants and specimens used in teaching their medicinal values
- Important rare species like Kupilu, Brihad Ela, Agaru,Karpur etc.
Students learn botanical identification, organoleptic evaluation, and traditional uses directly from live plant specimens.
- Museum
The departmental museum provides a strong visual and practical foundation for understanding herbal drugs.
It contains:
- 180 dry drug specimens
- 45 live specimens
- 50 educational charts
- 11 drug identification models
These exhibits help students understand morphology, organoleptic characters, and the classification of raw drugs.
- Pharmacognosy Laboratory
The pharmacognosy lab is equipped to train students in:
- Macroscopy and microscopy of drugs
- Morphological and anatomical identification
- Use of microscopes, dissecting boxes, and analytical tools
The lab creates a scientific environment where students learn drug identification with precision.
- Departmental Library
The department maintains a dedicated library with:
- Classical Ayurvedic texts
- Modern reference books on pharmacology, botany, and pharmacognosy
- Course-wise manuals and guides for UG students
The library supports classroom learning, research, and academic excellence.
