About Department
The Department of Shalya Tantra is one of the foundational clinical and academic pillars of Ayurvedic education. As one of the eight classical branches of Ayurveda, Shalya Tantra focuses on surgical and parasurgical principles, operative methods, and instruments described in classical texts, which continue to hold great relevance in contemporary Ayurvedic surgical practice.
The department trains students to understand surgical anatomy, wound management, trauma-related conditions, and a wide range of operative and non-operative procedures described in classical Ayurvedic literature. The primary aim of the department is to ensure that students gain clarity in fundamental surgical concepts, develop confidence in handling surgical instruments, and understand the principles of safe and ethical surgical practice.
Through a blend of classical knowledge, modern academic methodology, and practical clinical exposure, the department supports students in becoming confident Ayurvedic surgeons capable of delivering effective and ethical surgical care.
FACILITIES
- The department is equipped with several academic and practical learning resources to support student education.
- A well-organized surgical museum is maintained within the department, displaying educational charts, anatomical models, and surgical instrument demonstrations that help students visualize and understand classical surgical concepts and procedures in a structured manner.
- A special highlight of the department is the Ksharasutra Unit, which includes a dedicated Ksharasutra cabinet where the preparation of Kshara and Ksharasutra is demonstrated. Students are introduced to the preparation of Apamarga Kshara, thread coating techniques, and the maintenance of sterility and standardization during the preparation process.
- The department also has access to a dedicated simulation laboratory, designed to provide students with a safe and controlled environment for learning and practicing clinical procedures.
Clinical Exposure

- The department provides learning opportunities in various classical parasurgical procedures, including:Shastrakarma (surgical procedures),Ksharakarma, Agnikarma, Raktamokshana and Vrana Chikitsa (wound management)
- Students are also trained in surgical instrument handling, aseptic techniques, and basic procedural skills, helping them build confidence, technical competence, and a strong clinical foundation in Shalya Tantra.
